HOW DID YOU FIRST MEET?

RL: We met through mutual friends in Sydney. Reg was on holiday from Bali and I was up there from Melbourne for a long weekend.

It’s one of those funny stories actually. I was meant to be in LA for work, but the job fell through.
I was kicking around home all bummed out and my friend invited to Sydney for the weekend.
At first I declined because I was broke and busy, but then I figured, why not, and booked a last minute flight.

Reg and I met at a friends house in Surrey Hills, began chatting and discovered we were both on holiday
and both staying 50 meters apart from one another in Bondi. So I suggested we share a cab home 😉

Of course, there were a few hours of great conversation, many drinks and some bad dancing in between.

The following week, Reg was travelling to Melbourne, so we hung out and then she invited me to Bali. I was still broke and busy,
but that’s never stopped me in the past, so I went, and essentially, never came back! I mean, obviously I’ve been back,
but just for a week to pack up things and I’ve called Bali home ever since.

That was almost 6 years ago. It’s been a good 6 years.

WORKING IN DIFFERENT AREAS OF THE CREATIVE INDUSTRY, HOW DO YOU FIND BALANCING EACH OF YOUR BUSY SCHEDULES AND STILL FINDING QUALITY TIME ?

RL: At times, it’s a struggle. We have similar work ethics and I think there’s a mutual understanding and admiration of one another’s way of working and dedication.
I guess we know when to leave each other alone and when it’s time to pack things up and go hang out together.

Reg is pretty good at handing out the “I’m bored and want attention vibes”, which means drop everything, and go see her. I learnt that lesson fairly quickly.

RO: I divide my working days between time in my office, my shop, on the road and our home. I’m often riding around Denpasar all day, from supplier to tailor to another supplier…
But I know when I get home Rik will be there in the studio with the dogs. And all 3 of them always come to greet me at the front door when they hear me park my bike, which is cute.

We spend our evenings together, eating dinner, hanging out, watching t.v series in bed.

DESCRIBE YOUR PERFECT DAY.

RLWake up at dawn, go surf for an hour or two, come home, see Reg and our two dogs looking happy. I’ll make breakfast for the both of us and then we’ll start our working days.
I’m happiest when everyone is kicking around home and doing their thing. Reg will have staff dropping by with material samples etc, so there’s lots of people around and there’s
that happy, productive buzz going on.

Hopefully I’m enjoying whatever it is I’m working on, so I’ll just be listening to music and drawing.
Later I’ll walk the dogs and then we can go meet some friends for a drink or dinner.

RO: Okay, so my day is pretty similar, but I’ll go to yoga or Pilates while Rik’s surfing. Hopefully there’s no stressful work related stuff happening and I’ll have a productive day.
Later, I’m happy if I get to eat my favourite food and drink my favourite drinks, whether out at a restaurant or home with our dogs.

Oh, and I follow that up with a Netflix binge.

WHO IS SOMEONE THAT DESERVES MORE RECOGNITION? WHERE CAN WE FIND THEM?

RL: Ohh, where to begin? Our good friends Bunny Bone and Yokii both make amazing work. They’re based in Bali too, in this incredible warehouse / art space they built.
Talented, humble people making wonderful things.

RO: My good friend Maggie. She’s a very talented, young photographer from Jakarta, but currently doing a year in Melbourne. She’s helped me so much with shooting my collections.
She’s quiet and shy but giggly and cute and very creative – I’m forever amazed with her ability to think on the spot and make great things out of ordinary situations.

DO YOU SHARE TASTE IN MUSIC? IF SO, WHAT ARE YOU LISTENING TO AT THE MOMENT?

RL: Haha, yeah, it’s pretty similar. Reg listens almost exclusively to The Beatles and The Cure – which, if you’re going to only listen to a couple of artists,
those two are a pretty good choice.

RO: The Beatles and The Cure of course!

IS TIME APART HARD? OR IS IT NEEDED TO STRENGTHEN A RELATIONSHIP?

RLWe have short breaks once and awhile, when one of us has to travel for work, or I go on a surf trip or something.
I never like being apart, but I think it’s healthy and we always seem stronger for it.

RO: I like my own space at times. I miss Rik when we’re apart but then love him more when we’re back together.

WHAT’S SOMETHING YOU LOVE THAT YOUR PARTNER CAN’T STAND?

RL: I listen to a lot of loud music when I work, and Reg doesn’t like that. However, my music taste is really pretty impeccable,
so I think it’s my singing along which she really can’t stand.

RO: Ridiculously hot sambal (traditional Indonesian chili sauce). I eat it with everything. Rik likes the taste but can’t handle the heat because he’s a pussy 🙂

TV, MOVIE OR CARTOON CHARACTER DOES YOUR PARTNER MOST REMIND YOU OF?

RL: Ohh so many! She’s pretty animated. So am I. We joke that we’ll have a cartoon baby!

RO: Aha, I know! Rik looks just like the emoji guy with the moustache!

DO YOU HAVE A SPECIAL TALENT THAT YOUR PARTNER HAS THAT NOT MANY PEOPLE KNOW ABOUT?

RL: Reg cooks amazing Indonesian food! She bakes a mean carrot cake too.

RO: Rik could be a weather man. He knows everything about the weather. He can tell me when it’s going to rain or when the winds going to change…
He is amazing writer, really good to communicate whats in his mind into words.

FARTING! Hahahaha

WHAT’S A MOMENT YOU’VE SHARED THAT’S TAKEN YOUR BREATH AWAY? SET THE SCENE? WHY DID THIS PARTICULAR MOMENT AFFECT YOU THE WAY IT DID?

BOTH: There’s been quite a few but one that we’ll never forget is our wedding day. Being surrounded by so many amazing people all celebrating the day together…
It was a really humbling and special feeling, not to mention an epic party!
