Clare Molnar & Raymond Martin

posted in: Blog | 0

Hello humans (or whatever intelligent lifeform you may be) For 6 years I, Clare Molnar, have called Raymond Martin
my best friend, my boyfriend, my partner in crime, my main squeeze, my pork dumpling, you name it.
We were not only lucky enough to meet each other, but also find ourselves together.
We are two creatives, artists even.. I’m a visual artist while Raymond, audio. Raymond is THE most talented musician
you could ever know (all fact, no favouritism here pals.) A multi-instrumentalist, with a passion for drums.
You may know him from every single band in existence, but his main acts have been Semper Fi and Gravemind.
And you may know me from taking photos of it all. I’m a photographer, and I will occasionally draw a thing or two.
Sure, our professional lives are cool and all, but we also have a sausage dog named Nugget.
She is what is most important. Find out more about our little team and who we are!

HOW DID YOU MEET?

CM: We met in a shitty high school in Western Sydney, we were both loser kids who bonded over Slipknot.

RM: We first met through a mutual friend in high school (I’d say we were aged fifteen or so?),
We did a heck of a lot of talking over MSN & I always used to admire Clare whenever I’d
hear her speak, she is still to this day the most intellectual & humble person I’ve
had the pleasure of meeting.

WHAT CARTOON CHARACTER OR POP CULTURE ICON DOES YOUR PARTNER REMIND YOU OF?

CM: I could go on for days. DAYS. I’ll sum it up for the people at home with Animal from The Muppets.

RM: Lisa Simpson, but not a total nerd!

BEING YOUNGER THAN MOST WITHIN YOUR FIELDS, WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELVES IN 5 YEARS?

CM: I’d like to think in 5 years Raymond and I will have conquered the world with our family of dogs.

RM: Walking off stage after playing somewhere overseas to see what rad live shots Clare has taken
& sharing some cuddles with our sausage dog, nugget.

WHAT’S SOMETHING YOU CAN’T STAND THAT YOUR SIGNIFICANT OTHER LOVES?

CM: Choosing Hawaiian Pizza rather than anything else on the menu.

RM: Podcasts, they kill me man haha!

WATERHOLE, WATERSLIDE OR WATERFALL?

CM: Why can’t I choose all three. I’m super indecisive. If I had to choose one I’d say waterfall
but I don’t want to offend the other two choices. Nothing personal.

RM: Pshhhhh, waterslide, gotta go fast.

WHAT PROJECTS DO YOU HAVE COMING UP?

CM: The next few months our team of two will be extending our travels to the other side of the country.
I’ll be photographing the Blacken music festival in Alice Springs and Gravemind in Perth
(and watching Raymond drum at both) First Australia, next the world.

RM: We’ll be heading to Perth this weekend with my band (Gravemind, who are currently preparing for our next release)
& I’ll be doing some session work for some bands here & there with Clare by my side & camera at the ready,
feeling like a relaxing holiday overseas somewhere is quite overdue too!

HOW DOES YOUR SIGNIFICANT OTHER INSPIRE YOU?

CM: Raymond has inspired me from day one for too many reasons to list, but he is headstrong and determined in the best ways
when tackling any aspect of his work. It’s his strength that has gotten him this far in life, and that carries me through hard times.
He takes a little ol’ introverted me and makes me feel tough and gives me confidence when I need it most.

RM: Since we first met I’ve watched her grow & progress into the woman she is today, she’s tenacious & keeps a level head
regardless of what’s thrown at her, I wouldn’t have achieved what I have to this day if I didn’t have her in my life constantly
throwing me advice, when I have a terrible day she can turn it into the best day of my life, whoever first said “no one is perfect”
obviously never met Clare Molnar.

TOURING IS A BIG PART OF BAND LIFE AND ALTHOUGH YOU BOTH REGULARLY TOUR TOGETHER,
IS TIME APART NEEDED TO STRENGTHEN YOUR RELATIONSHIP?

CM: For the past 6 years of dating and around 2 years of Raymond touring we have spent a lot of time apart.
It’s something we’ve had to adapt to, sure. But every time he comes back or we get to go places together it reminds me everything’s even better with him.
Time apart only solidifies the fact that time together is better. For example, going through the drive thru and getting a 20 pack of nuggets alone, eh
BUT if I’m Han Solo going through the drive thru with my best pal Chewie at midnight for a feed, thats what is best.

RM: I really enjoy having Clare around as much as possible, it never used to bug me as much being on the road without her but the last run I did it really set in hard
how much I missed her, I wouldn’t say it strengthens a relationship but it makes you really look forward to seeing them again!

ANY MEMORABLE MOMENTS WHILST YOU’VE BEEN ON TOUR TOGETHER?

CM: Lots of memories came out of Raymond breaking his ankle right before tour. Pushing him and his smug grin around the airport
and onto the planes, bowling over anyone in our path, that was a good time. On the other hand, there was the time we slept on the
side of the Hume Highway, only about a week after the ankle break. In my ’89 Ford Laser, on a winter night, no blankets, no heating.
I was sleep deprived driving us home from a show in Canberra, I have done this relatively quick drive my whole life, so I thought I’d be ok.
Next minute I feel my eyes closing, we found a 24 hour motel, but the only room left was at the top of a massive flight of stairs with no disability access.
So I keep driving until I just couldn’t anymore. I pulled over into a rest stop and we tried to sleep. Raymond couldn’t get his leg comfortable.
I couldn’t sleep feeling what could only have been frostbite forming. I thought Raymond’s boot-leg would just snap off.
We lay there for 2 good hours before we decided to make it to the Maccas for shit coffee and to just power it home.
In hindsight we laugh and say it was actually a pretty funny night but I remember at the time thinking I wouldn’t even survive,
if not the frostbite it would have been the yowies or bunyips.

RM: Well, the fact that she laughs at a lot of my jokes is a start, but there have been almost too many to mention,
the first thing that always come to my head is when I broke my ankle & still went on tour & she babysit me (nothing out of the ordinary anyway),
we aren’t slowing down anytime so the memories will continue to grow haha!

WHAT’S A MOMENT YOU’VE SHARED THAT’S TAKEN YOUR BREATH AWAY?

CM: The most early moment I think would have been when we were still in my “we’re just friends, I am too young for a boyfriend” phase.
We were at the local park, as kids are, and Raymond (who sported a NICE emo mop fringe at the time) wouldn’t let me move his hair out of his face.
I fought and he fought and I swept it away and I saw his whole beautiful face for the first time and his eyes literally took my breathe away
(and honestly they still do) and I am pretty sure I told him to never cover his face ever again. Not long after he cut his hair short,
the first of many cute hair phases I have witnessed this man have. Ultimately Raymond is my best mate.
We know each other more than anyone else in the world. He constantly builds me up as I do him.

RM: Our first kiss, before I met her family properly we kept it kinda hush hush, I would walk her home from school & then one day we had our first kiss at the end of her street under a random tree, I’d never felt so uplifted before & from then on every moment we’ve shared she continues to take my breath away.
