Joel started printing designs on tees as a hobby. He though it might be a good way to get people interested in his designs for their bands and has always been nuts for band tees. Often the bands weren’t for him but their tees were sick. So he began designing for band tees that had no band affiliation. Just crazy designs. One colour. Pushing detail to the extreme. It was great fun but going nowhere.
Then Tom got involved and turned a scattered collection of scratchings into an idea and then into a thing. Tom was introduced to Joel through email and asked him to design a t-shirt for the band he was playing in. Tom saw some early Marauder designs and wanted to be a part of it straight away. After previous attempts at a clothing line he saw this as a great opportunity to try again, Joel’s illustrations hooked him in with the dark style imagery. They may be from opposite parts of the country, but their values are the same: family, art and punk rock.
Joel’s girlfriend coined the name Marauder and the future began to build itself. With the support and motivation of Alana and Tom, family and friends his work is getting more focused, more refined and coherent. Joel is overwhelmed with the response so far, and thank everyone who has worn our gear and loved our art. PMA
MARAUDER JUST CELEBRATED ITS 4TH BIRTHDAY, IS THERE ANYTHING ABOUT THE INDUSTRY THAT STILL SURPRISES YOU?
T: How supportive some brands are and how unsupportive others can be. At the end of the day we are all chasing the same goal and that’s to sell your ideas, passions and products to customers. Give advice, share experiences.
J: The fact that people think its all about easy money haha. I’ve been printing my own tees and making my own clothes since high school, I do this because i love it.
Yeeeeeaaaaaaaaaah were you guys even born yet? Also I invented undercuts.
BIGGEST PET PEEVE?
T: Crooked picture frames.
J: Getting old…..
ORIGIN OF MARAUDER
T: I was playing in a band at the time and I needed someone to design a tee for us and to this day I still can’t remember how I initially got Joel’s email address but he crushed it on the design and sent up a care package of early Marauder stuff shortly after. I saw the potential straight away, the designs were so intense so I asked Joel up if he would be keen to let me turn it into a legit brand and he agreed, so we launched the company without meeting face to face for 6-8 months and Four years later here we are.
J: I designed a shirt for Toms band and he pretty much hit me up about taking my shitty little clothing label and making a proper grown up thing
DESCRIBE MARAUDER IN 3 WORDS.
T: straya, beers, skulls.
J: grow up guys
FAVOURITE MOTTO, PHRASE OR LYRIC?
T: P.M.A. (As predicable as it is haha)
J: MAKE STUFF
LIVING ON OPPOSITE SIDES OF AUSTRALIA DOES IT EVER GET DIFFICULT?
T: When we first started it was, we were still working each other out and going through the trenches of building a company. But these days we see each other every second month or so. Plus we can Skype when we want to have a chat about whatever.
J: With the new modern age I’m in contact with Tom constantly. Like in the phone adds.
OVERATED AND UNDERATED
T: Overrated- Pizza Underrated- Pizza
J: Overrated – trend based design….. come on guys, learn how to draw. you’ll really like yourself a lot more. Underrated – Kimchi. Also fist bumps.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE MARAUDER DESIGN FROM OVER THE PAST 4 YEARS
T: Our “Rose from the dead” sticks out the most for me.
J: The Dickies jacket for me. Ever since I saw some printed for Mindsnare at a place I used to work Ive wanted to try it
TV, MOVIE OR CARTOON CHARACTER DOES YOUR BUSINESS PARTNER MOST REMIND YOU OF?
T: Every wise man in every kung-fu movie.
J: De Niro in anything
SPECIAL TALENT THAT PEOPLE MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT THE BOTH OF YOU?
T: I can one handed clap.
J: I’m super old, so I got shit on everyone haha
WHAT DOES D.I.Y MEAN TO YOU?
T: For me it means getting something done because you need it done (obviously). I only picked up a camera because we needed someone to take photos and at the time I lived in the outback so fashion photographers were pretty scarce. If you want something done right do it yourself.
J: Giving it a shot. Im getting big on re use and re purpose. Moving away from creating more rubbish and disposable products
Support your friends and create groups and communities and you’ll be helping other people give it shot as well.
I’m lucky enough to be surrounded by people doing things they love, creating beautiful and terrible things.
WHAT’S A MOMENT IN MARAUDERS LIFE THAT’S TAKEN YOUR BREATH AWAY?
T: The day I quit my job, packed my car and was sitting at the last stop sign in town thinking “well here we go” and drove 20 hours to start a new life and give this clothing label a real crack that shit was exciting, scary and liberating at the same time.
J: Tom left his high paying job to push the company more. The fact he could bail on that financial security because he backed what we were doing was pretty epic for me
Between the both of them Tom and Joel are Marauder clothing.
