INKBOY | Artist & Designer

The new kid with influences from an old block. inkboy is a Melbourne based artist and designer specialising in the modernisation of classic animated art of the 1930’s.
Drawing influences from his home town of Melbourne and the likes of Disney and Fleisher, he aims to puts a cup and a half of charisma into every piece.

YOU’VE WORKED IN A LOT OF DIFFERENT MEDIUMS, WHAT DO YOU WANT TO DO MORE OF IN 2019?

well that’s a tough one, I honestly enjoy digital work most of all but some more acrylic murals would be what I’m aiming for this year.
Painting a two story character is definitely in the dream journal.

WHO/WHAT EMPOWERS YOU?

The support of strangers goes a long way to making me feel like I’ve got a weird little place in the world that matters (strangely)
to people and I don’t want to let those people down. It’s who I do it for that makes the biggest impact in particular my partner
and friends who keep me aiming higher and are reminders of what is most important.

DO YOU FIND IT EASY WORKING FOR YOURSELF OR ARE THERE STRUGGLES IN FREELANCING?

I’ve been working as a designer during the week for the past couple years while keeping freelance up during nights and weekends,
so I can definitely say the true struggle is lack of free time while trying to balance life and sleep. Discipline is definitely
the biggest factor for me; it’s all too easy to pick up the xbox controller and zone out some days.

WHAT CARTOON, POP CULTURE OR MOVIE CHARACTER DO YOU MOST RESEMBLE IN PERSONALITY

This one took a lot of thinking, but I can’t shake the feeling that I’m Jane from Daria. Just with worse boots and less ear piercings,
but who knows; maybe its time for a makeover.

WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN 5 YEARS TIME?

Alive and well, with my own studio that would double as a gallery specialising in alternative design and branding;
connecting Melbourne and international artists.

OUTSIDE OF ART WHAT’S A SPECIAL TALENT OF YOURS THAT NOT MANY PEOPLE KNOW OF?

I used to play Cello for 7 or 8 years; If I could pick that up again i’d vibrato your socks off.

OVERATED? UNDERATED?

Overrated, Ramen. Underrated, Soba.

3 WORDS THAT BEST DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE?

Grave Yard Mickey

WHAT ARE YOU LISTENING TO AT THE MOMENT?

AMO from Bring Me the Horizon, huge fan of their new direction and stoked to see them later in the year.

WHAT’S A MOMENT IN YOUR LIFE THAT’S TAKEN YOUR BREATH AWAY?

Now that, is a tricky one. The obvious one is probably too similar to a romantic comedy so I’ll go with a tale I like to call “Curry Udon”.
Upon my most recent trip to the land known as “Japan” me and my partner stumbled into a small restaurant on a muggy night in Tokyo.
The lights of the nearby taxis flashed by as we stood confounded by the sign in front of us. Curry…Udon.
With a morbid curiosity we fumbled in and took our seat, surrounded by bibs and chopsticks it soon became clear we were in for something new.
Curry laksa, udon? was it the perfect combination. Yes it was. Never to be found beyond the boundaries of Japan the illusive curry udon will exist in our hearts until we are
reunited another year, in another time.
