Cut Off Your Hands Jewellery is the product of Melbourne based jeweller Alana Smith’s brutalist dreams come true. Featuring hard, fractured,
bold lines and oxidised features, her work endeavours to make the wearer of her pieces feel strong and powerful. Inspired by all things brutal

wether it be music, architecture or art, Cut Of Your Hands will adorn you with heavy metals for life.

WHAT’S THE ORIGIN STORY OF CUT OFF YOUR HANDS JEWELLERY?

My son Wolf, was about 1 1/2 years old and I was re-entering the work force and came to the realisation that as much as I had loved working
in hospitality previously, I needed a change. The only thing I could think of that I had ever wanted to do outside of slinging lattes was to learn
to make jewellery! I decided to give it a whirl at home and discovered I loved it! Bought a bunch of materials and just started teaching myself.
As soon as I started getting pieces cast I pretty much put them out there and my friends and family started wanting me to make them pieces.
I thought ‘this could actually kick off!’ so I came up with the name and started an instagram and it has been growing organically over the last
couple of years. The name comes from the idea that people will love my rings so much you would have to cut off your hands to get them

YOU HAVE A VERY CLEAN CUT YET BOLD STYLE, IS THIS INTENTIONAL
OR SOMETHING THAT JUST HAPPENS WHEN THE CREATIVE JUICES ARE FLOWING?

I have always loved jagged, sharp shapes. Anything with strong harsh edges appeals to me from art, music and architecture. I was told to
check out Brutalist architecture and holy shit I was like YESSS this is my kind of design. In my mind I ideally want to create pieces that
make you feel strong, bold and powerful when you wear them. Just how brutalist architecture has the same effect when you see
the imposing structures.

WHAT ARE YOU DOING WHEN YOU’RE NOT CREATING JEWELLERY?

I study – I am in my last year of doing the Jewellery and Object Design Diploma at Melbourne Polytechnic. I also work part time at Windfall
Jewellery in Footscray. Mostly I just hang out with my partner, Joel and our legend of a son, Wolf!  Listen to a lot of metal and go to gigs
when we have a babysitter available! I joined the cult of f45 so I try and keep my mental and physical health in check with that 5 days
a week. I’m also quite partial to listening to disturbing true crime podcasts

POOL PARTY OR BEACH BASH?

To be honest I’m not a huge fan of swimming in pools or beaches however if I have to choose then I would say Pool party but only if it
involves something like Psycho Las Vegas which is a metal festival that involves a crazy pool party!

WHERE DO YOU WANT TO BE IN 5 YEARS?

I want to be totally self employed and smashing it! I would love to have an ultimate studio set up with all of the amazing tools I desire
and just be able to make to my hearts content knowing that my business is successful and I can provide for my family.

UNDERRATED?  OVERRATED?

Underrated: Sleep. I fucking love sleep.
Overrated: Bio-life cheese. Give me ‘Sheese’ any day!

WHAT WOULD 16 YEAR OLD YOU SAY ABOUT YOUR LIFE RIGHT NOW?

She would be stoked and pretty surprised and would say thanks for sorting your shit out!

FAVOURITE PHRASE MOTTO OR LYRIC?

I have pilfered this from my Marauder clothing boys but ‘MAKE STUFF’ and ‘LOVE WHAT YOU DO’ are pretty much awesome mottos
to live by. The joy of discovering what I actually wanted to do in life was pretty spectacular so I highly recommend people trying
new things. Do that short course in whatever thing you’ve always been curious about! You never know, it could change your life!

WHAT DO YOU WANT TO DO MORE OF IN 2019?

This is the year I will be launching my webstore properly – keep April 5th free for my launch party at bSIDe gallery in Fitzroy! So basically
this year I just want to get stuck into making new pieces, that’s the trouble with snoozing on getting my first collection launched is that
I’m already ready for the next one! I want to do a bunch of rad earring options including earrings that people with stretched ears
can wear. Hoops etc Lots of pieces that involve chain and some more big fuck off rings.

WHAT’S A MOMENT IN YOUR LIFE THAT’S TAKEN YOUR BREATH AWAY?

You would expect me to say the birth of my son, right? well of course YES, that, but I tell you what, seeing Amenra, who are a band from
Belgium, play live, was an absolutely spiritual spine tingling experience. I cannot express how much of an all encompassing huge sonic
experience it was that made my heart so happy as I never thought I would get to see them play!! Music is a huge part of who I am and
I make all my pieces listing to loud and heavy and somewhat brutal music, it’s a big part of my process.
