Dodgy Paper is 100% Dodgy. hand made artist paper made in Melbourne.
WAS THERE A LIGHTBULB MOMENT THAT MADE YOU WANT TO CREATE RECYCLED
ARTIST PAPER OR WAS IT SOMETHING THAT NATURALLY HAPPENED OVER A LONGER PERIOD OF TIME?
It all happened quite randomly, and I’m super thankful that it did. My mate Kevin had given me a kids paper making kit, and it sat at the studio for a while untouched.
Then when my mate Oli ( Ruskidd ) told me about a recycled ink he was working on made from recycled printer cartridge runoff ( ink ), that was when the light bulb moment occurred.
And luckily thanks to good ol’ Kev, I had a kit right there at my studio. Havn’t stopped making sheets since then.
IF YOU COULD HAVE ONE SIDE KICK FROM POPULAR CULTURE TO HELP YOU IN YOUR PAPERK MAKING
WHO WOULD IT BE?
Inspector Gadget. Need those extra mechanical arms for multi-paper-making, plus all the bonus gadgets could come in handy,
like the helicopter attachment and magnifying glass to inspect dodgy chunks.
IS THE ENVIRONMENT AND SUSTAINABILITY SOMETHING YOU THINK ABOUT WITH EVERY PROJECT YOU WORK ON?
Sometimes the source may not be 100% rubbish ( such as a comic book, or books in general ), but reusing them for a creative outcome is a meaningful process.
WHAT’S ONE OF YOUR BIGGEST PET PEEVES?
When theres plastic in my paper scraps…..
YOU’VE TURNED DAMN NEAR EVERYTHING INTO PAPER. FROM SHOES, TO LOLLY WRAPPERS
TO EVEN A PHONE….IS THERE SOMETHING THAT YOU’VE TRIED BEFORE THAT HASN’T WORKED OUT?
IS THERE SOMETHING THAT YOU’D LOVE TO GET YOUR HANDS ON AND MAKE INTO PAPER?
As long as there is pulp to hold things together, pretty much everything I’ve tried has worked so far. I”ve been trying to make paper from my old t-shirts for a while,
but the blender wont pulp it up, so I’m keen to sort that out. In terms of something I’d love to get my hands on? Who knows! There’s so much to use,
and it’s exciting discovering and being given things to make into paper. But I’d love to get my hands on some secret government documents or something real juicy.
WHAT TV, CARTOON OR POP CULTURE CHARACTER DO YOU MOST REMIND YOURSELF OF?
Some sort of professor / scientist / creative being.
AS WELL AS RUNNING DODGY PAPER YOU ALSO GO UNDER THE ARTIST NAME CHEHEHE.
TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR STREET ART ROOTS AND HOW THAT HAS EVOLVED INTO
A MORE MURAL/GALLERY BASED PROFESSION
Yeah so I’ve been making art and painting on the street for around 11 years now, but only making paper for 3ish. I grew up inspired by graffiti
and the art I saw around the city, and got involved when I was at Uni studying multimedia. I moved into full time art around 6 years ago,
and was lucky to be able to get some mural work painting my art for businesses and private commissions, whilst also participating and
making art for heaps of group shows and a few solo shows over the years. It’s been great to add paper making into my creative practice,
and as a business it helps too to be able to work with my art, but then keep on making paper for others to make their art.
WHAT DOES A NORMAL DAY IN ISOLATION LOOK LIKE FOR YOU?
Coffee, pack and send out orders, make some pulp, turn on the live stream, make paper, eat, make paper, eat, do some drawing, sleep.
BEING A SMALL BUSINESS OWNER DURING COVID-19 IS A SCARY TASK.
CAN YOU SEE ANY POSITIVES COMING FROM THIS? WHAT DOES THE REST
OF 2020 LOOK LIKE TO YOU?
Yeah I mean its been a scary wave with some lows but also some highs. It’s been nice to be working from home and not having to travel anywhere
as my dodgy shop/factory in Richmond closed at the end of February. I’ve also been ticking alot of things off that I had been putting off for a long time,
which is a big positive. And yeah, I think it’s actually helped me focus and I hope that keeps rolling for rest of 2020.
WHAT ARE YOU BINGE WATCHING RIGHT NOW?
I’m watching “Alone” alot. It’s like survivor, but they actually have to survive. It’s real good.
It’s also free on SBS On Demand 🙂
